national doughnut day 2013Philadelphia will be celebrating National Donut Day 2013 this Friday, June 7, 2013, with a handful of places you can go to score free donuts.

Take Krispy Kreme, for example. With four store locations in the Philly area and six locations all together, you could conceivably visit each and every location on National Doughnut Day, and walk away with a free donut at each place. Your pants might not fit by next week, but that might be a chance you want to take.

Here are the details of the free doughnut giveaways at Krispy Kreme, according to the Krispy Kreme Facebook page: all you need to do to get your free doughnut is stop in to Krispy Kreme on June 7 for a FREE doughnut of any variety. No purchase necessary. You’ll find the Philly Krispy Kreme locations at the following:

bistrot la minetteDuring Summer 2013, you’ll have more than a dozen venues offering free movies at one time or another. The first that I could find on the Uwishunu site starts on Monday, June 3rd. It’s a series called “French Films Under the Stars” being hosted by Bistrot La Minette. One of my favorite movies in the 1980s was a French film called “Diva!”

While “Diva” is not on the menu, so to speak, the following films are at Bistrot La Minette for June 2013 (films are showing Monday, Thursday and Friday throughout the month):

June 3, 6 & 7
The Valet (La Doublure) 2006

June 10, 13 & 14
The Dinner Game (Le dîner de cons) 1998

June 17, 20 & 21
The Well-Digger’s Daughter (La fille de puisatier) 2011

June 24, 27 & 28
The Intouchables 2011

Here’s how the Uwishunu site describes this series of free movies:

Enjoy French films, French fare and French wine on Monday, Thursday and Friday evenings in the restaurant’s courtyard. For those looking to dine alfresco while enjoying the film, reservations at least half an hour before showtime are suggested. Films begin at 8:30 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, and 9:30 p.m. on Friday.

Bistrot La Minette is located at 623 S. 6th Street in Philadelphia.

summer reading 2013When I was little my library’s summer reading program was popular among my peers. We all couldn’t wait to get a new sticker on our chart every time we went in and reported on which book we’d read.

My, how times have changed.

Summer reading 2013 through TD Bank in the Philadelphia area means this–if you kid reads 10 books, he or she gets $10. Now, granted that is not cold hard cash in his pocket, right away, but $10 that TD Bank will deposit in a new or existing account for your child.

Here are the details, courtesy of the TD Bank website:

  1. Read 10 books this summer.
  2. Print out the Summer Reading Form (343K PDF)
  3. Write down the names of the books they’ve read
  4. Take the form to the nearest TD Bank
  5. Receive $10 in a new or existing Young Saver account

Of course, with every offer comes disclaimers. For this TD Bank summer reading 2013 program, keep in mind the following:

  • $10 will be deposited into a new or existing Young Saver account.
  • One coupon per customer during the promotional period.
  • Cannot be combined with any other offers.
  • Valid May 6, 2013, through September 30, 2013.
  • Must be 18 years of age or younger to participate.
  • Offer valid in the United States only.

Huh, 18 years or younger? I’ve got a 17 year old who is an avid reader. Maybe I ought to sign her up for this program? They have TD Bank locations where she’s going to college in the fall. Why not get her started with a savings account with $10 free?

FYI, there are more than 250 TD Bank locations in the Philadelphia area, including Doylestown, Mount Holly, and Northeast Philadelphia.

Whenever the temperature outside drops to 32 degrees or colder, you can get a free cheesesteaks spring roll at Davio’s. All you need to do is show the weather report on your mobile device, with the current temperature displayed.

So what’s the catch? Well, the promotion runs Monday through Friday only–sorry weekend foodies–and between 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., and then again between 5:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. Again, weekdays only.

If you’re a cheesesteaks lover, it’s cold out and you happen to be in Center City, head over to Davio’s at 111 S. 17th Street.

I first became a fan of the Corner Bakery Cafe about a dozen years ago when I was doing a lot of business in Chicago. It seemed that Corner Bakery Cafes were on tons of corners in the Windy City–perhaps how it got its name.

Now the Corner Bakery Cafe has moved East. It was only in the past year or so that Corner Bakery Cafe locations started opening in the Philly area.

If you’d like to stay up to date on specials, sales and freebies at this chain, I would recommend signing up for the Corner Bakery eCafe. For doing so you’ll get a coupon for a free cookie. You can do that through the Corner Bakery Facebook page.

You’ll find Corner Bakery Cafe locations around Philadelphia in Pennsylvania only, in the following places:

PENNSYLVANIA

  • Ardmore
  • Bala Cynwyd
  • Horsham
  • King of Prussia
  • Newtown
  • Philadelphia

(Thanks to Vonbeau Freebies for a heads up on this freebie.)
