spy exhibit memorial dayWith the weather forecast to be rainy and cool, rather than warm and sunny, this Memorial Day weekend, visitors to Philadelphia and those who live here alike may be looking for alternate, indoor plans. I’ve got a way for you to spend Memorial Day not only indoors but on the cheap at the Franklin Institute as well.

Through my affiliate relationship with Goldstar, you can get 50% off or half-off tickets to the Franklin Institute’s “SPY” exhibit for Monday, May 27 aka Memorial Day. Tickets are also available for upcoming days as well. Here are details about the exhibit from Goldstar:

From voice alteration technology to robotic catfish, SPY: The Secret World of Espionage takes you on a memorable tour of some of America’s most fascinating real-world spy equipment, tactics and paraphernalia. The Franklin Institute’s Mandell Center hosts this illuminating exhibit showcasing rare treasures from the CIA, the FBI, the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) and the immense private collection of intelligence historian H. Keith Melton. Featuring over 200 historical artifacts and the stories they have to tell, this exhibit lets you explore several hands-on spy experiences, including creating your own personal disguises, masking your identity via voice alteration and navigating through a field of laser beams.

So as far as dates go, nearly every weekday, from Monday, May 27th through Thursday, July 4th, you can get tickets to the SPY exhibit for $14, rather than $28, when you purchase tickets through Goldstar. So that’s Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday when tickets are 50% off. Unfortunately, these cheap tickets are not available on Fridays and weekends. But with school out soon, you may have more options for visiting during the week when the prices are lower.

The Franklin Institute is located at 222 North 20th Street in Philadelphia.

summer reading 2013When I was little my library’s summer reading program was popular among my peers. We all couldn’t wait to get a new sticker on our chart every time we went in and reported on which book we’d read.

My, how times have changed.

Summer reading 2013 through TD Bank in the Philadelphia area means this–if you kid reads 10 books, he or she gets $10. Now, granted that is not cold hard cash in his pocket, right away, but $10 that TD Bank will deposit in a new or existing account for your child.

Here are the details, courtesy of the TD Bank website:

  1. Read 10 books this summer.
  2. Print out the Summer Reading Form (343K PDF)
  3. Write down the names of the books they’ve read
  4. Take the form to the nearest TD Bank
  5. Receive $10 in a new or existing Young Saver account

Of course, with every offer comes disclaimers. For this TD Bank summer reading 2013 program, keep in mind the following:

  • $10 will be deposited into a new or existing Young Saver account.
  • One coupon per customer during the promotional period.
  • Cannot be combined with any other offers.
  • Valid May 6, 2013, through September 30, 2013.
  • Must be 18 years of age or younger to participate.
  • Offer valid in the United States only.

Huh, 18 years or younger? I’ve got a 17 year old who is an avid reader. Maybe I ought to sign her up for this program? They have TD Bank locations where she’s going to college in the fall. Why not get her started with a savings account with $10 free?

FYI, there are more than 250 TD Bank locations in the Philadelphia area, including Doylestown, Mount Holly, and Northeast Philadelphia.

public garden admissionFriday, May 10, 2013 is National Public Gardens Day. And thanks to Better Homes & Gardens and the American Public Garden Association, you can enjoy two free admission passes to a public garden in the Philadelphia area.

According to the Better Homes & Gardens website, from which you can download your free admission pass, there are a handful of public gardens in our area participating. Four of them are:

Let’s just hope the weather holds out and is nice for Friday. I’d hate to suggest a free visit to a public garden when it is pouring down rain.

Virgin American has cheap flights from Philadelphia on sale right now.

Virgin American has cheap flights from Philadelphia on sale right now.

Whenever I hear about Virgin Airlines, I always think about overseas flights. But Virgin America, it seems, focuses on domestic flights, and right now has a flash sale going on for cheap flights from Philadelphia to California.

According to TravelZoo “For 72 hours, Virgin America is cutting nonstop California fares from Philadelphia to $139 each way for fall travel. This is the first time the airline has discounted fares into November.

These sale fares are valid for flights to Los Angeles and San Francisco and are available most Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, Sept. 10 – Nov. 20. Surrounding dates start at $20 more each way.

The sale ends at 11:59 p.m. CT Thursday.”

The Virgin American site has lots of cheap flights listed. For example, flights from Philly to LA or San Francisco are $139 each way.

This sale isn’t just for Philly either. I saw cheap flights from New York to the West Coast, along with flights from Florida, Chicago and Boston.

Besides history one thing that Philly is know for is its festivals. That’s because from spring until fall, Philadelphia hosts a variety of festivals that music fans and culture vultures will consider must-dos, must-sees and must-hears.

For music fans, there’s the second-annual Budweiser Made In America concert on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, headlined by Beyonce.

Literature lovers will swoon over the Celebration of Black Writing, one of the oldest African-American literary events in the nation.

And for movie buffs, the sophomore BlackStar Film Festival, a unique gathering of filmmakers and storytellers of the African diaspora, will be a two-thumbs-up experience.

Here are 6 must attend Philadelphia festivals 2013, listed in chronological order:

  1. May 4-June 1. Marking its 29th year in 2013, the citywide Celebration of Black Writing, hosted by Art Sanctuary, serves as one of the oldest African-American literary events in the nation. The month-long festival, themed Beautiful Without Permission: Celebrating the Literary Achievements of Black Women, features author readings and workshops for emerging writers and closes with a family day, complete with some of Philadelphia’s best food trucks, vendors, performances and more. This year’s Lifetime Achievement Award goes to playwright Ntozake Shange, author of For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf, and artist Nnenna Freelon. (215) 232-4485, artsanctuary.org
  2. June 1. Philly’s own Grammy-winning hip-hop band The Roots bring together artists from various genres for a daylong concert at the Festival Pier at Penn’s Landing. In its sixth year, The Roots Picnic includes all-star performances by Solange, Gary Clark Jr., Naughty by Nature, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis and, of course, The Roots. Festival Pier at Penn’s Landing, 601 N. Columbus Boulevard, (215) 629-3200, okayplayer.com/rootspicnic
  3. July 1-7. There’s no better place to celebrate America’s birthday than in its birthplace, and Philadelphia marks the Fourth of July with a free multi-day festival— Wawa Welcome America!—that includes a concert and fireworks extravaganza at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Last year, Common, Lauryn Hill, Queen Latifah and others graced the stage. Stay tuned for details about this year’s musical guests. 26th Street & Benjamin Franklin Parkway, welcomeamerica.com
  4. August 1-4. Dubbed  “the black Sundance” by Ebony magazine, the BlackStar Film Festival gathers filmmakers and cinema lovers for screenings and workshops that illuminate the global black experience. Helmed by honorary co-chairs Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson and Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter of The Roots, this year’s festival features a special transmedia performance with DJ King Britt. Also new this year: a ceremony that honors the legacy of the Howard University Film Program, screenings at the Barnes Foundation and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, a critical issues symposium, an international music showcase and more.
    (215) 232-4485, blackstarfest.org
  5. August 31- September 1. Last year, music lovers were thrilled when Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter stood on the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, alongside Jay-Z, to announce that a two-day musical extravaganza would take place on the Parkway: Budweiser Made In America. After an enormously successful weekend, Made In America returns to Philadelphia for year two. Acts include Beyonce, Nine Inch Nails, Public Enemy, Emilee Sande, Solange and more.  madeinamericafest.com
  6. September 21-22. Philadelphia has a rich jazz legacy, and this fall, the city welcomes the first-ever Philadelphia United Jazz Festival and Celebration. The festival aims to show off the outstanding jazz music created, performed and exported from Philadelphia. The historic Clef Jazz Club will serve as the event’s home base with several satellite stages located on Broad Street.  Clef Club, 738 S. Broad Street, (215) 893-9912, clefclubofjazz.org

  • Tues, Jun 4 @ 8:00pm
  • Wed, Jun 5 @ 8:00pm
