Outside the Eastern State Penitentiary

Terror Behind the Walls at the Eastern State Penitentiary (located at 22nd & Fairmount Avenue in Philadelphia) is one of the country’s top-ranked haunted house attractions.

Terror Behind the Walls kicks off tonight (9/23/11), runs through Halloween (a Monday this year), and right into November (11/12/11). There are a number of ways to experience Terror Behind the Walls and get your Halloween thrills on the cheap:

  • Go on a weekday night. Whereas tickets for Friday and Saturday cost $30 and Sunday cost $25, during the week you’ll pay just $20 for admission. (No children under 7 are allowed admission, fyi.) Halloween falls on a Monday this year–one of the cheapest days for admission!
  • Use an online coupon code or download a coupon to save $3 on admission. (Note: coupon is not good on Saturdays.)

According to the Eastern State Penitentiary website, the first Halloween at Eastern State Penitentiary took place in 1991. The National Historic Landmark, closed to the public since 1971, opened its doors to visitors who were able to tour the site at night. The historic site re-branded the event “Terror Behind the Walls” in 1997. Today’s theatrical production includes animatronic props, digital sound effects, and Hollywood-quality costumes and makeup.

Eastern State Penitentiary is an 11-acre abandoned prison that legend says is haunted every day of the year. It stands today in ruin, a lost world of crumbling cellblocks and empty guard towers. This gothic structure, with stark towers and soaring fortress walls, is eerie enough during the day. At night, the cellblocks fall into darkness, and the building becomes truly terrifying. Could one even go as far as to say that Eastern State Penitentiary is the East Coast’s version of Alcatraz, minus the island setting?

All proceeds from Terror Behind the Walls benefit the preservation of Eastern State Penitentiary, a National Historic Landmark.

If you choose to visit the Eastern State Penitentiary at another time during the year, you can also find a coupon online to save money on admission–this time, $1.

  1. If you’re (mentally) over 15 years old or so, Terror Behind the Walls is pretty lame. I went a few years ago because I get free tickets for living in the neighborhood (their attempt to bribe area residents into putting up with the noise, litter and choked streets) and I was many years older than anyone else, despite not being a fossil. Embarrassing.
