When I was a kid, rollerskating was my favorite leisure-time activity. Even up through high school, my friends and I would go rollerskating on the weekends. (Have I dated myself by admitting that publicly?)
Do your kids like to rollerskate? Well, they might just be able to skate for free this summer. Four roller rinks in the Philly area–all in New Jersey–are participating in a kids skate free program. Here are those four places so you can check them out:

Gail Collins Giving Free Talk at Princeton Library
Best-selling author and New York Times columnist Gail Collins kicks off the promotional tour of her latest book, As Texas Goes…: How the Lone Star State Hijacked the American Agenda on Tuesday, June 5 at 7 p.m., with a free talk at Princeton Public Library.
Having long seen America’s fundamental divide as a war between the Republican heartland and the two liberal coasts, Collins came to believe that Texas was the birthplace of the conservative political agenda that is now sweeping the country and defining our national identity.
Through its vigorous support of banking deregulation, lax environmental standards, and draconian tax cuts and through its fierce championing of states rights, gun ownership, and sexual abstinence, Texas, Collins writes, has become the bellwether of a far-reaching national movement that continues to have profound social and economic consequences for us all.
All Princeton Public Library programs are free and open to the public. If programs require registration, preference is given to library cardholders. The physically challenged should contact the library at (609) 924-9529 at least 48 hours before any program with questions about special accommodations.
The library is in the Sands Library Building at 65 Witherspoon St. in Princeton Borough. Call (609) 924-9529 for more information about library programs and services.
Betsey Johnson Going Out of Business Sale
To me Betsey Johnson represents iconic 80s punk fashion but made for the mainstream. When I was a student at NYU during that decade, I loved heading down to her Soho store to check out the latest in hot pink–still one of my favorite colors and the hue most often associated with her work. Unfortunately, time has not been kind to Betsey Johnson’s business model, and all of her retail stores are going out of business.
Starting last week the stores marked everything down by as much as 50%. Not only are the Betsey Johnson apparel, jewelry, handbags and shoes in the stores marked down, but also all of the store fixtures, such as apparel racks, shelving and lighting, are for sale.
There are two Betsey Johnson retail shops in the Philly region, if you want to go check out the sale:
- THE PIER AT CEASAR’S, ATLANTIC CITY
- PLAZA AT KING-OF-PRUSSIA, KING OF PRUSSIA
Announcing Living on the Cheap
(Here is the press release that went out today, May 15th, to announce the new website/network, Living on the Cheap, with which I am affiliated.)
Announcing Living on the Cheap
New website helps consumers find the real deals
Philadelphia, PA — Times are hard. Prices for food, gas and fun keep rising, yet our incomes can’t keep up. A new website, Living on the Cheap, says you don’t have to count squares of toilet paper or sacrifice cappuccinos to make ends meet.
Run by 22 veteran consumer journalists, Living on the Cheap is packed with practical advice on everything from using coupons to buy healthy food to saving money on car repairs. Its savvy reporting helps you navigate the many restaurant and retail loyalty programs as well as decide whether a bargain cruise is really a bargain.
Leah Ingram–founder of Suddenly Frugal, a blog about living more on less, and the Philly on the Cheap blog, which focuses on deals and discounts in the Philadelphia area–is one of the consumer journalists in the Living on the Cheap network.
“Our readers love hearing about creative ways to save money,” says Ingram, who is also the author of 14 books include Suddenly Frugal: How to Live Happier and Healthier for Less and Toss, Keep, Sell!: The Suddenly Frugal Guide to Cleaning Out the Clutter and Cashing In. “Some of our most popular posts include those that point towards freebies, such as Suddenly Frugal’s Freebie Friday posts.” In fact, MSN Money picked up Ingram’s recent piece on Mother’s Day Freebies, and featured it on the site’s front page.
Living on the Cheap is brought to you by the people who bring you On the Cheap sites in 29 cities, good to know if you’re ever traveling to Colorado Springs, Chicago or Charleston, South Carolina–some of the cities in the On the Cheap network.
In addition to city-specific savings, such as those that Philly on the Cheap highlights, Living on the Cheap focuses on ways you can stretch your dollar in your every day life. Here are five tips culled from recent Living on the Cheap stories:
- The most valuable card in your wallet is your library card. Libraries offer workshops, entertainment, and story hours, and even help finding a job, all for free. Many libraries also distribute free passes to local museums and attractions.
- Sign up for email alerts from your favorite restaurants and stores or “like” them on Facebook. You’ll get advance notice of sales as well as coupons, freebies and special offers.
- Track down the clearance section at your grocery store. You’ll find slightly damaged and discontinued items at a significant discount. Use coupons with these for extra savings.
- Check out websites like gofobo.com for free passes to movie previews. Join cinema loyalty programs to earn free tickets. Some theaters host weekly half-price days. This summer, many theaters will offer free or $1 kids’ movies.
- Like sports but hate ticket prices? Sign up for emails from ticket sellers. Many send out deals and two-for-one offers. Check local newspapers and websites for package deals (such as tickets, food and drinks). Try college sports for great action at bargain prices.
Living on the Cheap is written by savvy frugalistas who know a deal when they see one. Its writers contribute to Marketplace Money, MSN Money, The Miami Herald, AARP The Magazine, New York Magazine, Consumer Reports Money Adviser, Good Housekeeping, O Magazine, The Boston Globe, Bankrate.com and many more media outlets, including television and radio. Ingram has appeared on national and local television, including “Good Morning America,” “The CBS Evening News,” “The 10! Show,” “Action News,” “Good Day New York,” and “Good Day Philadelphia.”
“These days, we’re bombarded with money-saving tips and ‘deals’ that aren’t really deals at all,” Ingram adds. “The Living on the Cheap mission is to bring readers the tips that actually save them time and money.”

Get 13% Cash Back at Ebates
When you shop online, do you shop through a portal that pays you to start your shopping there? If not, you should be. My favorite shopping portal right now is Ebates.
Since 2010, whenever I need to buy anything online, I’ve logged onto Ebates.com first, and then continue on to the site where I’m going to shop. Why? Because Ebates gives a percentage back to you when you make your purchase. Sometimes the percentage is measly–2% or 3%–but it can add up. In the past year Ebates has deposited close to $180 in my PayPal account, just from the shopping I was going to do anyway online. This shopping included buying holiday gifts for all of my business clients as well as a bridal shower gift for my engaged cousin.
Today happens to be Ebates 13th birthday, and for today only you can get 13% back when you shop online, through Ebates today only, at hundreds of different online retailers–ranging from Avon to Weight Watchers.
Ebates also rewards me for referring my readers to its site, with a small commission. Even so, I would share these cash back deals with you, because, first and foremost, I’m a happy and satisfied Ebates customer.
(Thanks Houston on the Cheap for the heads up on this Ebates deal.)
Movie Tickets in Philly Area at a Discount
My frugal way of enjoying film entertainment is waiting for movies to become available On Demand via my cable company. Ideally, they are free, or at least heavily discounted from what I would pay in the theaters. However, sometimes I want to see a movie in a more traditional setting–as I did when I took my daughters to see “The Hunger Games” a few weeks ago. When I do go to the movies, I always try to see a showing earlier in the day, for matinee pricing. Plus, when purchasing tickets, I show my affinity card at the theater, which allows me to earn points towards free concession food or future free tickets.
Another way to be frugal when going to the movies is to buy tickets in advance at a bulk rate. Recently, there was an AMC Groupon that allowed you to do just that–buy a bunch of tickets at a discounted rate. And now there’s another deal that can help you with frugal film watching.
I just found out, through one of my affiliate networks, that Goldstar has a nationwide deal for Cinemark Theaters that allows you to buy four (4) tickets for only $30. That comes out to $7.50 each–cheaper than some matinee rates! It’s called the Cinemark Platinum Supersaver Movie Ticket Package.
Here’s the deal: you have between now and next week to purchase these Cinemark tickets through the Goldstar site–if you’ve never purchased from them, you’ll need to sign up, which is easy peasy–and then the discounted movie tickets will ship to you on May 25th, or right around Memorial Day weekend. You can use the tickets all summer long, as they have no expiration date.
The tickets are redeemable at any Cinemark Theatre location, including Cinemark, Century Theatres, Tinseltown and CinéArts. Here is a link that shows where Cinemark Theatre locations are. In the Philly area, your closest Cinemark Theater is in Somerdale, New Jersey, or in the Poconos–Stroudsburg, PA. However, if you will be traveling this summer to a location somewhere else that has Cinemark Theatres–and think you may want to catch a movie or two–you could bring these tickets along so you can see a film on the cheap during your vacation.
